4-12. Replace BCU Backup Battery Pack. The BCU contains two backup batteries that allow the IPADS to
continue to operate without external power being applied. The backup batteries can be replaced while the
IPADS is operational on DC power.
a.
Remove BCU Backup Battery Packs.
WARNING
Ensure that the BCU is not connected to AC power before opening the BCU cover.
CAUTION
Use extreme care when removing the BCU cover to ensure interior wires are not
pulled or stretched.
Use extreme care when closing the BCU cover to ensure interior wires are not
pinched under the cover's edges.
(1) If the backup battery packs must be removed while IPADS is running, open clamshell latches securing
BCU in frame and lean BCU outward to perform steps (3) through (9).
(2) If IPADS is turned off, remove BCU from frame, paragraph 4-9a. Cover will not be removable due to
securing lanyard and attached wires.
(3) Open BCU cover by lifting latches on ends.
(4) Lift cover and lean to side. Be careful not to pull wires out.
(5) Disconnect Velcro strap securing battery receptacles and connectors inside front of BCU.
(6) Using a number 2 cross tip screwdriver, loosen, but do not remove, four screws on top of battery
(7) Carefully lift battery heater straight up to remove, figure 2-4.
(8) Disconnect each battery pack cable from receptacle by pressing the lock lever on the battery connector.
(9) Lift the two backup battery packs out of BCU, figure 2-4.
b. Install Backup Battery Packs
CAUTION
Replace both battery packs. Do not mix new and used battery packs.
(1) If the backup battery packs must be removed while IPADS is running, open clamshell latches securing
BCU in frame and lean BCU outward to perform steps (3) through (9).
(3) With cover open and heater assembly removed, place two backup batteries into BCU, figure 2-4.
(4) Carefully place battery heater down over the backup battery pack. Secure four screws on top of heater
with a number 2 cross tip screwdriver while squeezing the outside heater panels against the batteries to
ensure that battery to heater contact is made.
(5) For both battery packs, connect battery pack connectors to BCU battery receptacles and verify the
connectors are securely locked to the receptacles.
(6) Wrap battery pack receptacles and connectors with Velcro strap to keep them together and out of the
way.
(7) Replace BCU cover. Be careful not to pinch any wires in the edge.
(8) Secure latches on ends to secure cover.
