Item
Function
Connector J1
Connects wiring harness W114 P2 to provide power to the CPNU from the BCU.
Connector J9
Connects wiring harness W114 P3 to exchange digital data with the CDU.
Connector J10
Connects to depot level test equipment.
Porro Prism
An optical prism used to achieve auto-reflection with a theodolite or total station instrument.
Stadia Scale
Used to determine distance from theodolite to IPADS using the stadia lines in the theodolite
reticle.
Level
Used to determine when the porro prism is level.
Locking Lever
Locks the level adjust knob to prevent rotation of the porro prism during travel.
Level Adjust Knob
Rotates the porro prism to level it for auto-reflection and stow it for travel. Pressing the knob
down disengages the adjustment mechanism allowing coarse adjustment.
Screw (3 each)
Secures CPNU to IPADS frame.
SECTION II. OPERATION UNDER USUAL CONDITIONS
3-3. General.
IPADS is normally operated from a land vehicle. Helicopters are used in special situations; e.g., great distances
between survey points, survey points inaccessible to a land vehicle, or when speed is of paramount concern.
IPADS operation in a land vehicle and helicopter are the same. Transfer between vehicle and helicopter is
NOTE
The following conventions are used in this manual:
Bolding of the text in this document identifies actions to be performed by
pressing keys or function key legends; e.g., Press Enter.
Keys that are pressed simultaneously have no separator between them; e.g.,
FNC DEL.
A series of keys that are pressed sequentially are separated by commas; e.g.,
A, B, and C.
Messages and instructions displayed on the CDU are capitalized; e.g.,
INFO: POSITION UPDATE REQUIRED
Flashing text on the display is enclosed in quotation marks, e.g., "GO".
!!! SURVEY CONTROL POINT (SCP) NAME LENGTH LIMITATION !!!
There is a known feature in AFATDS that limits the length of the Survey Control Point (SCP) Name to 8
characters. IPADS and FOS will accept, process, and transmit SCP names of up to 15 characters. But when
the SCP message is received at AFATDS, the SCP names will be truncated (shortened) to the first 8
characters. IPADS can automatically generate 15-character long SCP names, but they look identical when
shortened to 8 characters. To prevent the loss of SCP name data, the following solution is recommended:
AT THE IPADS AND FOS, LIMIT YOUR SURVEY CONTROL POINT NAMES TO 8 CHARACTERS OR
LESS. CHANGE IPADS GENERATED 15-CHARACTER SCP NAMES TO YOUR OWN CHOICE OF
NAMES UP TO 8 CHARACTERS LONG BEFORE TRANSMITING TO AFATDS.
