(a) An A in the function field indicates the automatic mode is active.
The automatic mode decides where to end a justified line. As characters are
keyboarded, character width is subtracted from the overall line length. When
characters keyboarded exceed the line length, the composing machine automatically
converts the last word space into a return and carries the word (overset) that would
not fit on the line to the next line.
