MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART
Section I. INTRODUCTION
B-1 GENERAL.
B-1.1 This section provides a general explanation of all maintenance and
repair functions authorized at various maintenance categories .
B-1.2 The Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC) in section II designates
overall authority and responsibility for the performance of maintenance
functions on the identified end item or component. The application of the
maintenance functions to the end item or component will be consistent with
the capacities and capabilities of the designated maintenance categories.

B-1.4 Section IV contains supplemental instructions and explanatory notes
for a particular maintenance function.
B-2 MAINTENANCE FUNCTIONS.
Maintenance functions will be limited to and
defined as follows:
B - 2 . 1 I n s p e c t.
To determine the serviceability of an item by comparing
i t s p h y s i c a l , m e c h a n i c a l , a n d / o r e l e c t r i c a l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s w i th
established standards through examination (e.g., by sight, sound, or
f e e l ) .
B - 2 . 2 T e s t.
To verify serviceability by measuring the mechanical or
electrical characteristics of an item and comparing those characteristics
with prescribed standards.
B - 2 . 3 S e r v i c e . O p e r a t i o n s r e q u i r e d p e r i o d i c a l l y t o k e e p a n i t e m in
proper operating condition,
i.e., to clean (includes decontaminate, when
r e q u i r e d ) , t o p r e s e r v e , t o d r a i n , t o p a i n t , o r t o r e p l e n i s h f u e l,
l u b r i c a n ts , chemical fluids, or gases.
B - 2 . 4 A d j u s t .
To maintain or regulate, within prescribed limits, by
bringing into proper or exact position, or by setting the operating
c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s t o s p e c i f i e d p a r a m e t e r s.
B - 2 . 5 A l i n e .
To adjust specified variable elements of an item to bring
about optimum or desired performance.
B-2.6 Calibrate. To determine and cause corrections to be made or to be
adjusted on instruments or test, measuring, and diagnostic equipment used
in precision measurement.
Consists of comparisons of two instruments, one
of which is a certified standard of known accuracy, to detect and adjust
any discrepancy in the accuracy of the instrument being compared.
