Repair.
The application of maintenance services (inspect, test, service, adjust, align, calibrate,
or replace) or other maintenance actions (welding, grinding, riveting, straightening, facing, rema-
chining, or resurfacing to restore serviceability to an item by correcting specific damage, fault,
malfunction, or failure in a part, subassembly, module (component or assembly), end item, or sys-
t e m .

O v e r h a u l.
That maintenance effort (service/actions) necessary to restore an item to a complete-
l y s e r v i c e a b l e / o p e r a t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n a s p r e s c r i b e d b y m a i n t e n a n c e s t a n d a r d s ( i . e . , D M W R ) in
appropriate technical publications. Overhaul is normally the highest degree of maintenance per-
formed by the Army. Overhaul does not normally return an item to like new condition.

R e b u i l d.
C o n s i s t s o f t h o s e s e r v i c e s / a c t i o n s n e c e s s a r y f o r t h e r e s t o r a t i o n o f u n s e r v i c e a b l e
equipment to a like new condition in accordance with original manufacturing standards. Rebuild
is the highest degree of materiel maintenance applied to Army equipment. The rebuild operation
includes the act of returning to zero those age measurements (hours/miles, etc), considered in
c l a s s i f y i n g A r m y e q u i p m e n t / c o m p o n e n t s.
